Charlotte Church ‘blows life savings’ on buying rundown house
Charlotte Church has really taken the plunge with her current renovation project after ‘blowing’ her life savings on the dilapidated property.
The former opera singer has filmed a new reality series, Charlotte Church’s Dream Build, which sees her transform a derelict house in rural mid-Wales into a luxury wellness retreat, complete with a wedding venue and glamping area.
However, it has cost her a pretty penny – in fact, all her hard-earned savings – with hopes of turning the £1.5million property into a lucrative tourist destination.
Charlotte, 35, told The Independent: ‘I’ve blown my life savings,’ adding that she secured a £750,000 mortgage plus an additional £300k from her parents ‘because I gave them a whack of money when I was a teenager’.
The property, named Rhydoldog House, was previously owned by interior designer Laura Ashley and boasts 49 acres of woodland and surrounding grounds. It will take a lot of work to renovate as the property has crumbling walls and collapsed ceilings throughout.
Her stepfather James and a host of builders have taken on the challenge of transforming the property.
It will become a retreat for Charlotte as much as the guests as the singer is training to be a ‘sound healing therapist’, which is in keeping with the wellness aspect of the venue.
‘I think that [saving the world] is through helping people to relax, to slow down, to face themselves, to find beauty and nature, and to be loving,’ she explained.
‘All of the practices of capitalism are deepening our unhappiness, and our inability to live with ourselves… This constant entertainment, this constant distraction, means that we can’t be connected,’ the star added.
The reality series will also provide a glimpse into Charlotte’s home life with husband Jonathan Powell, who she’s been married to for 11 years, their 18-month-old daughter Freda, and the singer’s children – Ruby, 14, and Dexter, 13 – from her previous relationship with rugby player Gavin Henson.
Charlotte Church’s Dream Build will air on Really and Discovery+ from January 11.
