Netflix\u2019s Fear Street: 1994<\/em> Soundtrack Is a Perfect 90s Mixtape
Netflix has a summer treat for fans of horror movies—slashers in particular—and anyone looking for a bit of Stranger Things-esque pastiche and nostalgia: the Fear Street movies. The first of three planned movies based on R.L. Stine’s books of the same name telling the overarching story of a small town called Shadyside, Fear Street: 1994 was released on July 2 and expertly told a creepy, fun, and at times gory story of a haunted town with a cursed history. And being set in 1994 (as the title makes plainly clear), that also means a prime opportunity for an excellent soundtrack filled with jams of the era. And from the moment that “Closer” by Nine Inch Nails plays in the movie’s first ten minutes, you know you’re in for a treat.
The music sets the mood properly; from some of the greatest alternative rock of the era to some hip-hop and metal, it really nicely captures the mood Fear Street: 1994‘s blend of Scream meets Stranger Things.
Now, while the songs certainly make for a mood that feels distinctly ’90s in a vague way, it must be noted that the exact specificity of the 1994 setting is a little wishy washy. One example? An early film needle drop is “Only Happy When It Rains” by Garbage, which is an absolutely amazing song and really does set the mood for the movie early on. The only problem? “Only Happy When It Rains” came out in 1995.
It’s fine. An inconsistency, yes, but it would be hard for something like that to impact your enjoyment of the first of three planned Fear Street Netflix films. Still, the movie’s soundtrack is a playlist worth jamming to when you’re in the mood.
