Father-Daughter Quarantined For Coronavirus Attend School Dance Anyway
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), anyone who’s been exposed to someone who has tested positive for coronavirus is considered at “medium risk” and should self-isolate. However, the father of a 20-year-old Missouri woman with the virus left the house with his daughter to attend a school function at Ritz-Carlton in Clayton — even though they were put under quarantine. Mere hours after the woman was tested positive, her family members put other people at risk by going to a (very) public space.
“The patient’s father did not act consistently with the health department’s instructions,” St Louis County Executive Sam Page told reporters on Sunday. “Instead, last night he decided to take his other daughter to a school function.”
Thankfully, the Villa Duchesne and Oak Hill School canceled classes today after hearing that the patient’s father and sister attended the father-daughter dance. The venue where the event took place also seems to be cooperating with health officials. “We are aware of news reports and have contacted health authorities to obtain their guidance,” the Ritz-Carlton hotel told TIME in a statement. “Meanwhile, we are taking additional steps to perform enhanced cleaning of hotel areas where the event was hosted. The wellbeing of our guests and associates is of paramount importance.”
Additionally, there was a pre-dance event that took place at a home with Villa and John Burroughs School students. “The likelihood of any of the Burroughs students contracting the virus is extraordinarily low,” Head of school Andy Abbott wrote in an email to students and parents. Still, those students were advised to stay home.
At a press conference on Sunday, Page said that health officials will issue a formal 14-day quarantine to the family by the force of law.
