Wimbledon betting tips and free bets: Betting guide for tennis championships as Djokovic and Barty lead the odds
WIMBLEDON has returned – and typically it is expected to rain!
There is great fever about the start of these Championships given that they were cancelled in 2020 for the first time since the Second World War due to the impact of the global Covid pandemic.
However punters may have to wait a while to see live tennis on the outside courts with rain forecast for most of the opening day.
And British No.1 Jo Konta will be watching from home after being required to self-isolate at home for 10 days after a member of her team tested positive for Covid-19.
SunSport’s tennis correspondent Rob Maul gives his best selections for the fortnight.

TIPS FOR WIMBLEDON – MEN
Hot shot: Novak Djokovic 8/11
It is difficult to look beyond the defending champion and world No.1.
Novak Djokovic, who faces Jack Draper in the opening match on Centre Court, is halfway towards a calendar Grand Slam having won the Australia and French Opens.
With no Rafa Nadal or Dominic Thiem, and with Roger Federer returning from injury, Djokovic has a clear run to the final.
Something would have to go wrong for the Serb not to win this title on July 11.
Mid Price: Matteo Berrettini 12/1
The dashing Italian won the Queen’s title over a week ago – the first debutant to win there since Boris Becker in 1985.
His serve often fires down at 130mph or more and his forehand is one of the most dangerous weapons in men's tennis right now.
If he is confident and fit, then No.7 seed Berrettini – who plays Argentine Guido Pella in the first round – could potentially cause issues in the bottom half.
And maybe, just maybe cause an issue for Djokovic if they meet in the final.
Long shot: Andrey Rublev 40/1
Admittedly the Russian doesn’t have how much pedigree on grass and has only reached the second round at Wimbledon on two attempts.
Yet the world No.7 has won 33 singles matches this year and has showed that he can quickly adapt to most circumstances and events.
The 23-year-old from Moscow plays Argentine Federico Delbonis in the first match but the downside to his chances is the prospect of facing Djokovic in the quarter-finals.
IPS FOR WIMBLEDON – WOMEN
Hot shot: Ash Barty 13/2
Ash Barty has been installed as the women’s Wimbledon favourite following the withdrawals of Naomi Osaka (personal issues) and defending champion Simona Halep (injury).
The world No.1 has not played much tennis during the pandemic, remaining in Australia until the start of January.
It is time she starts delivering on her talent, given she has not been beyond the fourth round of Wimbledon in four previous attempts.
Her first match on Tuesday will be an emotional one for her opponent, Spaniard Carla Suarez Navarro, who has overcome a recent cancer battle.
Mid Price: Coco Gauff 18/1
The American, who plays Brit Fran Jones first, is only 17 years old but she has a record of shocking the world’s best on the biggest stages
It is only two years ago that she announced herself to the world of tennis by beating Venus Williams in the first round and then losing to eventual champion Halep in the Last 16.
Gauff is one dangerous prospect and is feared by everyone she meets.
She might be young and the future of this sport but she is also ready to start challenging for the majors.
Long shot: Angelique Kerber 40/1
It has been a tough time for the German since winning beating Serena Williams in the 2018 Wimbledon final – her third different major.
Since then, she has had five first-round exits at the Slams and not been a contender for the big honours.
Maybe this is her time? Perhaps she will be buoyed by German’s performance against England at Euro 2020?
Her first match is against Serbian Nina Stojanovic and though she could face Williams in the third round, grass is a surface upon which she has had success in the past.
