Report: Before signing Tony Romo to massive deal, CBS offered job to Peyton Manning

CBS wasn’t only interested in Tony Romo.

Just a few days after multiple outlets reported that the network would be giving Romo a deal worth $180 million over the next 10 years to continue as the network’s lead football analyst, the New York Post reported CBS offered another former quarterback Romo’s job: Peyton Manning.

According to the Post, CBS was so worried about Romo’s eventual salary it made Manning an offer between $10 million to $12 million per year for five or six years. The Post reported that Manning was taking his time in deciding, and with Super Bowl LV being broadcast next year on CBS, the network fully committed to Romo. The Post also reported ESPN's eagerness to hire Romo away from CBS contributed to the network doubling down on Romo.

After retiring from the Dallas Cowboys after the 2016 season, CBS hired Romo for the 2017 campaign via a three-year deal worth $10 million, according to the Post. He instantly became a fan-favorite.

Romo, who is 39, played 13 seasons in the NFL, all of them with the Dallas Cowboys.

While Romo was negotiating with CBS, the Post reported that CBS reached out to current Saints quarterback Drew Brees to gauge his interest before Brees decided to announce he would be returning to the field for the 2020 season.

On the heels of Romo re-upping his agreement with CBS, the Sports Business Journal reported that ESPN has reached out to Manning’s representation to see if he’d be interested in taking over as the lead analyst on "Monday Night Football," replacing Booger McFarland.

Manning, 43, has been out of football since after the 2015 season, after a storied 18-year career with the Indianapolis Colts and Denver Broncos. Manning has been a regular contributor to ESPN with a football-themed documentary series called "Peyton’s Places," but Manning has long been thought to be the most desirable candidate for networks to lure as their lead analyst.

Gary Anderson hopeful he’s on the right track ahead of Premier League in Exeter

It’s been a mixed start to the 2020 Premier League for Gary Anderson.

The two-time world champion has kept in touch with the leading group, thanks to five points collected from games against Daryl Gurney, Peter Wright, Glen Durrant and Rob Cross.

“Two wins and a draw, better off than what I was expecting,” he said, candidly. “My darts aren’t even close to what they were two years ago. Each point I make is a bonus, so we’ll just keep fighting.

“It’s getting there. Each week – I was going to say less and less mistakes but [against Rob Cross] there were a few mistakes – but it’s getting less.”

My darts aren’t even close to what they were two years ago

Anderson knows he still has room to improve

The two-time Premier League champ has made a small tweak to his arrows, but the new tungsten isn’t what’s affecting his form.

“New darts, no problem,” he said. “It’s just the person that’s throwing them. When they go well, they go well.

“That’s just me throwing them. Sometimes I throw them right, sometimes, my whole body is moving. But we’ll get there one day.

“In 10 years’ time I’ll be ready for this game,” he added, laughing.

Anderson feels that there are several positives in his game right now, as he continues to go toe-to-toe with the best in the sport.

“These guys are [playing] seven days a week now. Five, six, seven hours a day. I’m not doing that,” he explained.

“I’ve lost to Michael van Gerwen twice on the Pro Tour, and they were games I thought I should never have lost. I just need to tighten up my mistakes. If I can sort them out, I’ll be fine.

“I’d just like to get back playing how me and Michael used to play in the old days. Get some of that back, and everything will be good.

“I’m not expecting nothing. The way I’ve been putting time in and the way my darts are going. So every game I win now is a bonus. I’ve got to take each game as it comes. If I win, good.”

The next Challenger

On Thursday night in Exeter, Anderson becomes the latest Premier League star to face a Challenger, and is eager not to yield ground and let Luke Humphries create history.

Live Premier League Darts

March 5, 2020, 7:00pm

Live on

However, the Flying Scotsman has been impressed with the world youth champ’s rise through the sport, and knows he has a major task on his hands.

“I’ve watched him at the Grand Slam and the Worlds. Cracking player,” he said of ‘Cool Hand Luke’. “One to watch. But he’s coming on. It’s his first time in the Premier League, he’ll want to put a show on.

“If Luke Humphries goes and plays the way he has been and beats me, hats off. I’m not going to be embarrassed about it. He’s a classy player. He’s one of these players that’s coming through.

“He’s no mug. If I got beaten by him, I wouldn’t be ashamed at all.”

Win or lose in Exeter, there’ll be no time to rest on his laurels.

The UK Open starts on Friday, and the Flying Scotsman is considered among the front-runners for the title he last won in 2018.

But such lofty ambitions are far from his mind. So what are his goals ahead of the weekend?

“Just get past a few rounds,” he answered. “You don’t want to go out in the first round. That’s every darts player’s nightmare.

“But the more I’m going to play now, Premier League is going to help me this year because I’m playing now, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday – I’m playing darts. If I wasn’t, I’d be playing darts Saturday and Sunday and that would be it, so it’s definitely going to help in the long run.”

The next product Google will launch won’t be Pixel 4a …it will be new Adidas clothing

Google has teased the launch of a new product. But this isn’t the long-fabled Pixel 4a or an updated Nest camera… this is something completely different.

Google has partnered with Adidas and Electronic Arts to release new smart clothing for March 10, 2020. The new launch is tipped to be part of the company’s Project Jacquard line, which focuses on developing smart fabrics.

The Mountain View-based company has previously partnered with Levis to launch a version of its trademark Trucker jacket with the ability to swipe on the fabric of the sleeve to skip, pause and play tracks. Wearers are also able to dismiss incoming calls with a pat to the arm – useful if you’re riding your bike and your smartphone starts to ring in your pocket.

It’s unclear exactly what form the new clothing line will take. But given that Adidas and Electronic Arts are involved in the announcement next month, it seems like a pretty safe bet to assume it’ll be football-related. In a tweet promoting the launch, Google said it has been working with Adidas Football and EA FIFA Mobile.

It used the tagline “play connected” in the post.

WhatsApp warning: Why your texts, photos, and number could be found with a Google search

Previous Project Jacquard initiatives have seen Google unveil a £700 Yves Saint Laurent Cit-e backpack – a designer bag with a touch-and-tap-enabled smart strap to let you control certain functions on a paired smartphone by running your hands along the strap.

Describing the goal of its technology-laden fabrics, Google states: “Our ambition is simple: to make life easier. By staying connected to your digital world, your things can do so much more. Skip a song by swiping your sleeve. Take a picture by tapping on a shoulder strap.

“Get reminded about the phone you left behind with a blink of light or a haptic buzz on your cuff.”

Kerry Katona shows off dramatic hair transformation as she goes PURPLE after experimenting with pink locks

A BEAMING Kerry Katona unveiled her dramatic hair transformation on Instagram yesterday as she showcased her new purple tresses.

The 39-year-old is no stranger to experimenting with colour having previously dyed her naturally blonde locks pink in January.

Delighted with the results, the former Atomic Kitten star shared a boomerang of her newly-dyed soft purple locks.

She captioned the hair-flipping shot: "Loooooooveee my new colour!!! @revivehairdressing @mvhairextensions thanks ladies."

Previously, she quipped there's "no turning back" after dying her hair candyfloss pink to complete her image re-vamp in January.

The mum-of-five has achieved her slim figure through training and SkinnyJab injections, and has been understandably eager to show off the results.

With her body on-point, Kerry turned attention to her barnet, transforming her bright blonde locks to a dusky pinky hue.

She detailed her time at the salon with a series of snaps posted to her Instagram Stories, with the first showing her lengthy locks pinned up with a series of foils in a hilarious image she captioned: "Lovin it."

Kerry recently revealed she moved house because her daughter Dylan-Jorge, five, was scared her old room was haunted.

The TV star, who was pictured moving into the huge new pad on Monday, explained the youngster had been sleeping in bed with her and boyfriend Ryan Mahoney since her dad George Kay died last July.

Writing in her New magazine column she said: "Since her dad died she doesn't like being on her own.

"DJ was convinced the house we've just moved out of was haunted and would always make an excuse to come to us in the middle of the night."

Kerry continued: "I love cuddling my little one more than anything, but it’s not doing me or Ryan any favours not having the bed to ourselves.

"So now we're in the new place, DJ knows it all has to change. Her bedroom is much cosier and we’re hoping the new environment will do her the world of good."

George was found dead at the age of 39 from a suspected drug overdose in July of last year – two years after his split from Kerry.

Over the weekend Kerry looked delighted as she moved into the sprawling East Sussex house with Ryan and the kids.

Kerry shares Molly and younger daughter Lilly-Sue, 14, with ex-husband Brian McFadden, whom she divorced in 2004 following two years of marriage.

She is also mum to daughter Heidi, ten, and son Max, nine, from her relationship with Mark Croft.

After a long weekend, the See Ya hitmaker took to her Instagram Stories on Monday to announce that they had "officially" moved in.

Serena Williams’ Daughter, Olympia, Dresses Up As Elsa From ‘Frozen’ In Adorable New Pic

Tennis living legend Serena Williams has her hands full with daughter Olympia, and in a new Instagram post the athlete captured her two-year-old riding a scooter dressed up as Elsa from ‘Frozen!’

The life of Serena Williams has to be so busy. Not only is the 23-time Grand Slam champion, 38, still a full time athlete, she’s a fashion designer, a business woman, and a mother to her two-year-old daughter, Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr.! Serena, who shares Olympia with husband Alexis Ohanian, 36, often captures her daughter doing the cutest things, and on March 2, the mother-of-one shared to her Instagram account a pic of Olympia that was too cute for words! In the photo, Olympia was enjoying some time outside on her Globber scooter while all dressed up as Elsa from the Frozen movies! The blue and white dress looked picture perfect on the youngster, as she rode around on her green scooter with the animated emoji of her favorite doll, QaiQai, right behind her! “Elsa has Olaf, @olympiaohanian has @realqaiqai,” Serena captioned the snap with a happy face and heart emoji.

Of course, just like Serena, Alexis isn’t adverse to capturing moments of his feisty daughter for his social media either! On Feb. 26, the Reddit founder lovingly shared a video with his toddler getting in on some arts and crafts. The art was painting and the craft was Alexis’s own fingernails! Olympia took her paint brush, with hues of purple, yellow, and more mixed together, and started painting her dad’s digits just as if they were at the salon! “This is dad life,” Alexis proudly shared in the video, as Olympia continued to paint his nails. Playing along with the fun activity, Alexis noted that he wasn’t sure “if this colors works for me.” It was such a sweet moment between the two!

But time and again, Serena and Alexis have demonstrated how much they love their little girl and how being there for their daughter is their number on priority. And for Serena, who balances the life of a working mom and makes it seem easy from the outside, the athlete has always been candid about how difficult it can be to try and make it all work. “I am often exhausted, stressed, and then I go play a professional tennis match. We keep going,” Serena shared in the caption to her Feb. 21 Instagram post, featuring a sleeping Olympia. “I am so proud and inspired by the women who do it day in and day out. I’m proud to be this baby’s mama.” Along with her inspiring words, Serena also added the hashtags, #nofilter, #nomakeup, #nohairbursh, and #justme.

Ever since the birth of her daughter in September 2017, Serena has used her platform to talk about being a working mom both on and off the court. The decorated athlete often uses her time following winning matches to share what Olympia is up to, how much she loves her daughter, and why the two-year-old is part of the reason she is still chasing that record-tying 24th Grand Slam title. Serena’s next big test, The French Open, is just around the corner in May 2020. With another opportunity to serve for history, fans cannot wait to see what this incredible mom does, with her husband and daughter there to support her all the way!

Cristiano Ronaldo flies home to Madeira after mother suffers stroke

Cristiano Ronaldo has been seen arriving back to his home island of Madeira after his mother was rushed to hospital after suffering a stroke.

The footballer was reportedly driven straight to Dr Nelio Mendonca Hospital in the capital Funchal after his private jet touched down from Italy just after 4pm on Tuesday.

He had taken the trip with his girlfriend Georgina Rodriguez and his eldest son Cristiano Ronaldo Jr, known as Cristianinho.

According to local reports, Cristiano walked into the hospital via a back entrance to avoid reporters and fans who had gathered outside the main entrance.

His mother, Dolores Aveiro, 65, is said to have been admitted to hospital just after 5am on Tuesday morning. Local media say she is ‘conscious and stable’.

Cristiano, 35, was due to play for Juventus in the Italian cup on Wednesday night, but he travelled to be with his mother after the medical emergency.

He is set to remain overnight in Madeira but is expected to leave on Wednesday morning unless his mum’s condition worsens, so he can be back in Italy in time for his side’s cup match against Milan in the evening.

One local report says his mother has suffered an ischemic stroke, which is an obstruction of the artery, preventing the passage of oxygen to brain cells, which is the most common type of stroke.

She is understood to have received mechanical thrombectomy, a technique which involves the removal of a blood clot from the artery through a catheter.

At the start of last year Dolores revealed she was ‘fighting for her life’ after a recurrence of cancer after being diagnosed with the disease in 2007 – the Juventus player then reportedly donated £100,000 to the hospital that saved his mum’s life two years later.

But in February last year ahead of a trip to Italy to celebrate her footballer son’s 35th birthday she admitted to new health problems.

She told a Portuguese TV station in an interview: ‘I was operated on another breast in Madrid, I’ve had radiotherapy and now I’m fighting for my life.’

There has been no official comment from the hospital.

Metro.co.uk contacted Cristiano’s reps for comment.

‘Sergei Skripal’ leaves touching graveside messages despite being in hiding

Two years on from the horrific poison attack, Sergei Skripal, still in hiding, looks to have found a way to leave touching tributes at the graves of his wife and son.

Sergei, 68, and his daughter Yulia, 36, survived the novichok poison assassination bid on March 4, 2018.

The pair remain under protection at an unknown location in the UK.

But fresh flowers and a heart-shaped wreath yesterday appeared next to their family’s headstones.

Tragically, it is still too unsafe for them to pay their respects in person to Sergei’s wife Liudmila, who died from cancer in 2012, aged 59, and son Alexander, who died of liver failure aged 43, in 2017.

  • Parents who fled Taliban with young sons say they are now attacked by Greek police

  • Pottery Cottage killings still haunt police investigator after four decades

Alexander had been on a holiday in St Petersburg – and would have turned 46 last Sunday.

Sergei often visited the graves, in Salisbury, Wilts, before he was attacked and it was one of the last things he and Yulia did before they were taken ill.

Former spy Sergei still owns his house in the city which was the epicentre of the attack.

It was thoroughly cleaned by the army and the council is hoping to buy it to put on the market.

  • Woman trafficked to UK as slave freed after scribbling secret message to police

Former council leader Matthew Dean, who was at the forefront of the crisis, said of their former neighbours in the quiet cul-de-sac: “The Skripals’ house has been completely decontaminated and everything is back to normal, but they have had terrible inconvenience.

“It should not be underestimated when you can’t order a pizza, have a delivery from Amazon, for months at a time – it makes daily life difficult.

“They were absolute innocent victims of a foreign power who were doing something absolutely, unbelievably, irresponsible.”

A Wiltshire Council spokesman said: “We are working with local residents and the owners to bring this property back into residential use.

“We have committed to ensuring it is not used to trade on its history…”

Authorities later identified two Russian nationals – Alexander Petrov and Ruslan Boshirov – as suspects over the poisoning, but no arrests have ever been made.

Comet ATLAS PLUNGING towards Sun in stunning pic

Comet ATLAS, also known as C/2019 Y4 but is nicknamed ATLAS as it was discovered by the telescope array system of the same name, could be heading towards a fiery death. The comet is currently in close proximity to Mars’ orbit, but is heading towards the heart of our solar system.

By late May, it will only be 0.25 AU away from the Sun – one AU (astronomical unit) is equivalent to the distance between the Earth and the Sun – and getting closer.

Despite it being behind Earth at the moment, in relation to our position in the solar system, the comet is already visible and astronomers have managed to capture a stunning image of the ice-ball which appears to have a bright green glow.

This is because ATLAS, like all comets, releases a green trail as the carbon and cyanide gas within the comet is ionised as it approaches our host star.

However, the fate of the comet is still unclear.

Experts are unsure whether it will burn to dust or whether it will produce a spectacular display of explosions as it approaches the Sun.

Karl Battams of the Naval Research Lab in Washington DC said: “ATLAS is a bit of a wildcard, and there’s a spectrum of possibilities as it nears the sun.

“At one extreme, it could simply crumble away in the coming weeks, and at the other extreme it could brighten up tremendously.

“It has an unusually small perihelion distance inside of Mercury’s orbit, which bodes well for getting those frozen gases fizzing furiously.”

The comet is so bright that even amateur astronomers are able to view it now from their gardens.v

Website Space Weather said: “Can’t wait for May? Amateur astronomers with mid-size backyard telescopes can observe Comet ATLAS now.

“Indeed, monitoring is encouraged as the comet is surging in brightness. Outbursts are possible in the weeks ahead as new veins of volatile material are exposed by intensifying sunlight.”

Comet ATLAS was first discovered on March 5, 2019 and is what is known as a hyperbolic comet.

This means it has an exaggerated orbit which can go way out into the cosmos before swinging back round.

NASA’s ATLAS telescopes (Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS), are designed to warn the space agency of passing asteroids and comets.

If a life ending asteroid were to be detected, NASA’s Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS) would be the first to sound the alarm.

ATLAS stated the protocol on its website: “Our immediate action will be to alert the Minor Planet Center (MPC), which is connected to Harvard University.

“The MPC quickly sends the information to several scientific groups around the world who calculate when and where the impact will take place.

“There are already systems in place between the MPC, NASA, and Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) to report the information to national and international authorities.”

France Shutters Some Cinemas Amid Coronavirus Concerns; Louvre Closed

As the coronavirus (aka Covid-19) spreads into Europe, cinemas in some parts of France have been closed for the next two weeks. This concerns the northern Oise area, which is located in the Hauts de France region, as well as the northwest department Le Morbihan located in Brittany. The Louvre museum also saw its second day of closure on Monday amid fears from workers.

France has been raising its alert level in the past few days, with three fatalities and 191 reported cases as of today, the latter representing 61 more overnight.

Le Morbihan had 13 confirmed cases as of latest reports, bringing the total in Brittany to 19. Schools there have been closed until at least March 14, as well as sporting events being cancelled and cinemas offline until the same date. There are more than 20 theaters in the area. L’Oise, which had 47 cases as of Sunday, is one of the most gravely affected and includes about 18 cinemas.

As we have noted previously, the impact of the coronavirus on box office is likely to continue to spread, and its impact — beyond the toll of human life — is being felt on industry business. Already China has been closed for weeks with no foreseeable date to reopen, while the situattion recently escalated in Korea.

Even more recently, Italy became a source of concern. And as we reported last week, if the spread continues on the European continent it will have further impact. French president Emmanuel Macron has cancelled all trips that are not related to coronavirus.

Overall, we are hearing from studios that this is an evolving situation that can change hourly. Already there have been release date changes in some markets, and that is likely to continue.
