Roy (played by David Neilson) has been a firm fixture of Coronation Street since 1995 but is finally marking the end of his 26-year stint as the friendly and quirky cafe owner. Struggling to cope after he lied to the police to protect Abi Franklin (Sally Carman), Roy decided it was time for a fresh start. As his niece Nina Lucas (Mollie Gallagher) tearfully pleaded with him to change his mind, he left with his suitcase in an understated final scene. Fans of the ITV soap weren’t pleased with the plot though, claiming it was too “underwhelming” for such a big character.

Roy ended up lying to officers after it was discovered that the gun used by drug lord Harvey Gaskell (Will Mellor) to kill Natasha Blakeman (Rachel Leskovac) was in Abi’s possession.

She’d plotted to use it to kill evil Corey Brent (Maximus Evans) before Roy tracked her down and talked some sense into her.

The gun was swept away in the sinkhole but ended up in the hands of criminal Harvey.

After he mistook Natasha for Leanne Battersby (Jane Danson), Harvey fatally shot Leanne.

More to follow…

Ever since Roy realised how traumatised Natasha’s young son Sam Blakeman (Jude Riordan) has been left following her death, he has been unable to forgive himself.

He became convinced he needed to leave Weatherfield in order to escape his guilt, and despite Nina’s best efforts, he packed up and left on Wednesday.

Announcing he was going to work as a chef in South America, he made his departure.

Fiz Brown (Jennie McAlpine) told him: “You are as much a part of Weatherfield as those cobbles are.”

“There’s nobody on this earth like you,” Carla Connor (Alison King) stated as she pleaded with him to stay.

Viewers complained the soap icon’s exit wasn’t realistic though.

Twitter user Mary asked: “Is Roy really leaving it’s such a sudden storyline #Corrie.”

Lil Peach pointed out: “This doesn’t make sense, surely it’d take time to plan, and tel people etc? #Corrie.”

Kat commented: “It also makes no sense to me that roy would abandon nina in her time of need [cry emoji] i’m low-key angry at this storyline #corrie.” (sic)
