'Friends': David Schwimmer Knows Exactly What Ross Would Be Doing Today
As one of the most iconic sitcoms of the mid-1990s and early 2000s, Friends is giving fans a much-anticipated reunion at the end of May 2021. While the unscripted special will not be a continuation of the group’s old lives, it created nostalgia for the stars and is sure to do the same with fans.
Although we will not find out what Rachel, Ross, Phoebe, Joey, Monica, and Chandler are up to today, the actors and actresses know their characters well enough to know exactly what they would be doing. Actor David Schwimmer, who portrays Ross Geller, knows without a doubt where his character would be today, and we have all the details.
‘Friends’ is an iconic show
First airing on NBC in 1994, Friends became one of the most popular shows of all time. The TV sitcom followed the life of a group of six friends in their 20s and 30s living in Manhattan, New York.
The series started with Rachel Green running from her wedding day to seek the advice of childhood friend Monica Geller, who was a chef living above the Central Perk in New York City. Taking a waitress job at the coffee house below the apartment, Rachel naturally fits with Monica’s circle of friends, who included Phoebe Buffay, Joey Tribbiani, Chandler Bing, Ross Geller.
From revolving romances to career issues, the group was always there for one another as they solved their problems on the iconic orange couch at their favorite hangout, the Central Perk. The show’s relatable characters and comedic relief grew an expansive fan base that lasted long after Friends ended in 2004.
‘The Last One’ for Ross and Rachel
The series finale of the fan-favorite comedy sitcom was a two-part episode that closed many of the show’s long-running storylines. One happy ending fans were excited about was Ross and Rachel becoming a couple for good.
While the two dated on and off during the series, Ross continued to have feelings for her but was always too afraid to let her know. At the end of part one of the finale, Rachel is shown leaving Ross’s bedroom but told him that it was “the perfect way to say goodbye” before she left for her new job in Paris.
As Rachel leaves for the airport in the final episode, Ross chases after her to confess his love for her. However, after his confession, Rachel still gets on the airplane leaving Ross feeling brokenhearted, until he gets home to find a confusing message from Rachel on the answering machine.
The message leaves him wondering if she changed her mind and got off the plane or if it was really too late. Then, Rachel appears behind him to announce that she had gotten off the plane, creating the ideal ending for the two.
After a 10-year run, it was an emotional moment as the group of six friends said their last goodbyes and parted their separate ways. The final scene of episode 18 of season 10 was the perfect ending as the friends left Monica and Chandler’s empty apartment for a final cup of coffee together at the Central Perk.
What does Schwimmer say Ross would be doing today?
In HBO Max’s Friends Reunion!, the stars of the series shared their thoughts about where their characters would be today. Schwimmer, who portrayed the kind-hearted paleontologist, said that Ross, aside from “playin’ with the bones, would’ve invested in Joey’s sandwich shop and lost a lot of his savings for his kids.” Co-star Matt LeBlanc, who played Joey, the struggling actor on Friends, added “dinosaur-themed sandwich shop, bronto-burger.”
What do you think your favorite Friends stars would be doing today if the hit series was still running 17 years later?
