Tragedy struck in the latest season of NCIS as Emily Fornell (played by Juliette Angelo), the daughter of former FBI agent Tobias Fornell (Joe Spano) sadly passed away. Once the dust has settled on his latest case with his old friend, Leroy Gibbs (Mark Harmon), showrunner Steven D. Binder has confirmed on Twitter the fan favourite will be back in the next instalment of the CBS drama.

Tobias ‘TC’ Fornell will return in the upcoming 19th season of NCIS, as confirmed by Steven D. Binder’s recent announcement on Twitter.

During his recent interactions with fans on social media, one eager NCIS viewer pressed the producer some months ago after this year’s season finale in May.

They asked him: “Please tell me Fornell is going to come back for this one or Gibbs is going to see Franks?

“He’s something for the fans after that. It was just wow. We still aren’t over this crazy season.”

In addition to Fornell, this fan is still holding out hope for an appearance from Gibbs’ old mentor, Mike Franks (Muse Watson), potentially in a flashback scene.

At the end of the devastating conclusion to NCIS season 18, Gibbs barely makes it out alive when his new boat suddenly explodes.

Fans are currently speculating the ex-team leader has faked his death, and Binder’s update suggests his old FBI buddie could be trying to track him down when the show returns.

The showrunner replied: “How about this? I am pleased as punch to confirm for you that Fornell will be appearing soon.”

He then hashtagged the post ‘#joespanorocks’, confirming that frequent guest star Joe Spano will indeed be reprising his role.

NCIS enthusiasts were naturally thrilled by the news, and celebrated Fornell’s impending return in the comments.

One viewer tweeted: “Yay [for] Gibbs and Fornell! Double that Yay for lots and lots of Gibbs.”

Unfortunately, it’s likely that Gibbs will be taking a backseat in the new season, following reports that lead star Mark Harmon will be back ‘part time’ when NCIS returns.

The good news is this could mean Fornell will have a much more prominent role next time, as the rest of the NCIS agents will need all the help they can get to track down their old boss.

Fornell has become the most enduring recurring character in the series, having appeared in all but the 17th season of the popular CBS action drama.

In season 18, Fornell once again teamed up with Gibbs, this time to take on a much more personal case.

The two investigators joined forces throughout the most recent outing to take down the drug ring Fornell’s daughter had fallen victim to.

Sadly, they were too late to save Emily from her drug dependence, and she succumbed to an overdose in the ninth episode of the season, ‘Winter Chill’.

Gibbs’ ex-FBI partner will undoubtedly be in mourning next time we see him, but hopefully he can pick himself up in time to help his best friend in his hour of need.

For those who can’t get enough NCIS, spin-off NCIS: Los Angeles and the newest addition to the franchise, NCIS: Hawaii, are also all heading to screens after the summer.

NCIS season 19 will premiere Monday, September 20 on CBS.
