The BBC dance competition returned for a second episode and the stakes were high as it was the first elimination of Strictly Come Dancing. After performing the Paso Doble, professional dancer Nadiya and presenter Dan Walker were met with criticism from the judges. However, Nadiya later defended her decision to choose the routine.

The dance partners joined presenter Janette Manrara for an episode of Strictly It Takes Two where they shared exclusive details about their experience.

Speaking on their Paso Doble routine Janette highlighted: “The judges had mixed reviews about it, some of them were a little bit unsure, some were just making noises.

“I was for the first time on team Craig, which rarely happens,” she confessed.

The presenter then asked Nadiya about the importance of the dance being ‘well-suited’ for Dan, after Craig mentioned it was.

“It’s absolutely important and the choreography was made like Craig said, my choice to do it because of the concept as well,” the professional replied.

“And I think also the VT, everything was connected,” before Dan interjected, “you had gone through it carefully.”

Nadiya added: “Absolutely, so I was really happy for Craig to see and mention it, I was absolutely proud of Dan.”

“I mean that gladiator on that Strictly floor,” she remarked.

After their performance, the duo scored 26 points which followed the astonishing score of 24 from their first week.

Their total score of 50 meant Dan and Nadiya were safe from the dreaded elimination and were going through to movie week.

Week two saw actress Nadia Wadia leave the show even after her dance-off with fellow contestants Katie McGlynn and Gorka Marquez failed to secure her a spot.

After their performance, the dancing duo received comments from the expert panel of judges.

Hard to please judge, Craig Revel Horwood stated: “It could’ve done with a little more shaping but it was strong.”

New to the panel, Anton Du Beke said: “I liked it in actual fact, because I liked your energy and your power.”

“It was a little bit too much, but just the different character you bring and the power, keep it up,” Motisi critiqued.

While Shirley Balles simply stated: “Another good show, well done.”

During the episode of Strictly It Takes Two, Nadiya confessed she was taken aback by Motsi Mabuse’s comments and hit back.

Janette started it off when she said: “I like the intensity, I think that’s what you want in a Paso Doble and when you’re being a gladiator.

“I’ve never heard, is something too much on Strictly, it’s never too much for Strictly,” the professional stated.

This Saturday, the contestants and their partners will return for the highly anticipated movie week.

Strictly Come Dancing continues Saturdays at 6.45pm on BBC One.
